Visas are available from the Chinese Embassy: www.china-embassy.org/eng/
You can apply for a visa 3 months in advance. You will need a Single Entry Tourist ("L") visa for one month to participate in the Tibet or China trek, or for three months to participate in both treks.
You need to submit (by Express Mail, Certified, Priority with Delivery Confirmation, or other UPS or FedEx trackable mail service):
- Your passport
- One passport-size photograph
- Completed Visa Application
- Visa fee payable to "Chinese Embassy" (Visa, Master Card, Money Order, Cashier's Check or Company Check): rates are given on their website
- Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (Express Mail, Certified, Priority with Delivery Confirmation or other UPS or FedEx trackable mail)
You generally do not need to submit a letter of invitation or trip itinerary.
Packing Lists
For Tibet Treks:
- Small overnight backpacking pack
- Warm sleeping bag – 0 degree F
- Good hiking shoes or boots
- Teva sandals or quick-dry canvas shoes
- 3-4 short sleeved or t-shirts
- 2 long-sleeved inner shirts
- 1 warm sweater or fleece
- 1 water- and windproof jacket with some lining
- 1 pair rain pants (or a long poncho that will go over thighs when sitting on a horse)
- 2 pair long johns
- 1 pair long pants
- 2 pair wool socks, 3 pair normal socks
- 4-5 pair underwear
- Wool hat
- Gloves/mittens
- Handkerchief or small sarong or camping towel for use at the hot spring
- Sunhat
- Sunglasses
- Sun block
- Pocket knife (be sure to put in checked luggage)
- Book, journal, pen, writing paper
- Camera
- Small musical device if you like
- Some snack foods and one or two freeze dried meals
- Water bottle that can handle hot water
- Medicinal items you often use
- First aid items you may need
- ATM card with Visa/Mastercard signal on it to get money
- NO TRAVELERS CHECKS – endless trouble. Cash is better.
Extra for China:
(even Tibet-only trekkers may want to bring these, as they are light.)
